Topic

Autumn 1 – North America

We will begin the term by reading, Letters to my Daughters by Barack Obama. This text links beautifully with Rebel Girls by Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo and Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg. We will examine some of the geographical features of North America and make comparisons to Crewe.

Autumn 2 and Spring 1 – Anglo Saxons

We will look at where the Anglo-Saxons came from, and more importantly, why they settled in Britain. We will examine all forms of Anglo-Saxon life, such as their villages, weapons and occupations. We will also learn about how we know so much about Anglo-Saxon life and look at the differences between primary and secondary evidence. Our texts for this topic will be The Lost Happy Endings – Carol Ann Duffy and Arthur and the Golden Rope – Joe Todd-Stanton.

Spring 2 – Space

The children will explore what life is like in Space, we will learn lots of different facts about the planets and the universe. We will also be learning about the history of space travel, where rockets are launched from and why, and even about animals in space! To complement our topic we will be reading The Darkest Dark – Chris Hadfield.

Summer Term – World War II

For this fascinating topic we will first look at how the reasons why war broke out it Europe in 1939 and make a timeline of important events. We will compare the life of children during the war to our lives now by learning about how and why children were evacuated to the countryside and how this affected their lives. We will be reading The Paperbag Prince – Colin Thompson and The Hunter – Paul Geraghty.

Homework

At the start of each half term children will bring home a sheet containing details of suggested home learning. In addition to this, children are expected to read daily and, where possible, please take the time to read with your child, focusing on their reading comprehension skills. The children also have access to Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars websites.

Timetable

At the start of each term you will be notified of your child’s PE (or swimming) day and their Outdoor Education day. Please ensure children have PE kit and suitable shoes for both indoor and outdoor.  PLEASE label all PE kits and school uniform to save us time and you money! For Outdoor Education lessons, please ensure children have wellies and an appropriate coat in school.

For the Autumn Term our PE day is Thursdays and children may come to school dressed in their school PE kits.

Each morning there is one longer break and three lessons; these will be Maths, English and Reading. Children are welcome to buy a snack from the kitchen or can eat a healthy snack from home during the second break if they wish to.
